We had kongnamul gukbap for breakfast on day 7 of my South Korea trip in Jeonju. Kongnamul gukbap 콩나물국밥 means soybean sprouts soup with rice. It’s yet another famous food in Jeonju which you must try. Because soybean sprout contains asparaginic, it can help dissolve alcohol. That’s why kongnamul gukbap is also known as hangover food in Korea.
Banchan (clockwise from right)- fresh kimchi, spicy octopus and radish kimchi. The fermented shrimp or saeujeot 새우젓 (top plate) is use to mix into the gukbap (soup with rice) to add flavour.
Kongnamul gukbap 콩나물국밥 @ 6,000 won (RM18.00). The rice is in the soup. The soup is a bit bland. You need to add fermented shrimp for flavour.
We were also given a raw egg in metal bowl each. Not sure what to do with them, the waitress demonstrated for us. First she took 3 tablespoons of the kongnamul soup and add into the raw egg. Next she teared up a packet of salted seaweed and sprinkle on top of the egg. Mix all together and eat it. It was yummy.
Overall, Waengi’s kongnamul gukbap is quite good. It’s just that I think kongnamul gukbap is not my thing. I pretty much prefer dwaeji gukbap. 🙂
