Gain Makgeolli Restaurant is yet another eating place recommended by our guesthouse owner, Mr Lee. We told him we wanted to try a makgeolli restaurant and he introduces this one which is just in the vicinity of Jeonju Hanok Village. Makgeolli 막걸리 is Korean traditional rice wine and is a well-known ‘food’ in Jeonju. We head to Gain Makgeolli on day 6 of our Jeonju, Korea trip for dinner.
From our pre-trip read up, makgeolli restaurant in Jeonju will serve makgeolli along with many side dishes. What we didn’t prepared for is the amount of makgeolli presented to us. We ain’t a good wine/liquors drinker so can you imagined when we (3 ladies) were serve with a large kettle of makgeolli (3 large bottles of makgeolli poured into the kettle)? We had a good laugh and jolly good time sampling the delicious makgeolli and some weird side dishes.
건배!!! (Cheers)
All the kettles staring at us as we’re seated beside it. We felt a lil’ pressure to finish the makgeolli. In the end we drank 1/3 of the amount only. We even asked them why can’t they give us a small kettle or just a bottle of makgeolli. They said the set come with 3 bottles. Urggh!
Menu at Gain Makgeolli Restaurant. That’s a mirror below the menu.
We ordered the first one which cost 20,000 won (RM60.00).
A total of 18 banchan (side dishes) with a kettle of makgeolli at 20,000 won is quite affordable.
Another view of our banchan. All 18 of them.
When we were served these, we were a bit regretful. How on earth can we finish them all? Some of the dishes were not so yummy namely the 2 types of snails. Funnily for me the silk worm taste good. My favorites are the pork jerky, squid, seaweed and pajeon (spring onions pancake). In the end, we really couldn’t finish the whole thing. We were too full. We saw our neighboring tables also have leftovers. Proof that 18 side dishes are too many. What a waste of food.
Anyway I think this will be my first and last experience with makgeolli restaurant. Don’t get me wrong. I love makgeolli but I kinda dislike some of the side dishes. It was a wonderful experience nevertheless. One I will never forget. Oh btw make sure you answer the nature call before leaving the restaurant. We had to quickly walk back to our guesthouse for that. Too many makgeolli in our system on a cold night. Brrrr…
With the leftovers makgeolli, we told the waiters to drink on our behalf before we left. LOL
The place is bustle with locals and locals tourist. We’re the only foreigner.
