My sister introduced me to Meng Kee Char Siew Restaurant not too long ago. I’ve been to this eatery twice so far and the char siew quality differs so much both time. It’s like eating at two different restaurants with the same name. I will also compare the char siew from Meng Kee to the one I had at Chan Meng Kee Restaurant. The names sounded almost similar, don’t they? *chuckles
From our first visit…
As you can guess, Meng Kee Char Siew Restaurant is fame for its char siew.
Blanched bean sprouts. If you can help it don’t order this. Too weak. One of the worst I’ve eaten. The rice (not in picture) is also quite weak.
Roasted chicken. Well, the taste is just typical. Nothing too exciting. Our plate of roasted chicken was quite tough.
Chinese innards sausages. No idea how it tastes like. I didn’t eat this.
The star of the restaurant. The oh-so-good-looking char siew!!!
Sweet melt in your mouth with charred flavour. Gorgeous. And the fatty layers… ohh so good. 🙂 In my opinion, the char siew from Meng Kee is better by a hair’s breadth compared to the char siew from Chan Meng Kee Restaurant. The difference is that Meng Kee char siew is a tad sweeter which really suit my palate.
Char siew wan tan mee were sold out during our first visit. Hence we came back again for 2nd round. This time early morning.
Second visit:
Pickled green chilies – a must have for wan tan mee.
Char siew wan tan mee with fried mini dumplings @ RM4.50. I was expecting the exact char siew quality from my first visit unfortunately this was not the case. The char siew given were lean and tough which make the whole wan tan mee eating experience a dull one. The only consolation is the yummy fried mini dumplings.
Sui kau aka dumplings. Too tame. Fairly unappetizing for both dumplings and broth. Each sui kau cost RM1.00.
A typical Chinese restaurant setting. They were going to relocate although I have no idea when. The new address should be No. 30, Jalan Pekedai U1/36 (just a few shops away from its current location; opposite Meng Kee Peking Duck).
Parking is fairly easy to find too (for our case when we were there both times).

That’s the drawback about living overseas where all these yummylicious goodies have to be home made by oneself. We can buy them from the restaurant but so so expensive!
Ya. Whatudo. But learning to make them is also good. 🙂
The char siew looks good! But I agree the bean sprouts look kind of weak. LOL. After having eaten fat juicy bean sprouts in Ipoh, I now feel all bean sprouts in KL and PJ are of inferior quality. What? the quality of the char siew was different on your 2nd visit? That’s what I hate about restaurants that do not maintain the quality of their food!
Pengkalan Rama Chicken Rice Ball in Klang has good bean sprouts dish. I love it. Yup that’s what I dislike about restaurant not maintaining their food quality.
This meng kee char siew damn horrible, actually one of the worst char siew I ever eaten in my life so far. the rice??? typical , and if you take away, you will regret forever. I will definitely won’t go back again as the price is sky high not really worth for the money. this restaurant only good for those rich wanker.
Hi Ruffige, they’re only good when it’s 3 layered pork. The lean pork is very bad in my opinion.
Agree 120% with you. Everytime my friends boasts and bring me there, I always end up asking them, how are they willing to pay so much for eating sweetened charcoal? Their pricing are ridiculous and not to mention their nose-to-the-sky attitude. Once, we wanted to addon 1 portion of charsiew and the waiter told us its not allowed, as they will only allow addon of at least 2 portions or 2 mixed portions of either chicken, siew cheong or charsiew. Notice no one ever comments about their roasted chicken?
You’re absolutely right about the rich wanker part!
Patron of at least 3-4 were forced to take at least half a chicken even though were only wanted to eat wan tan mee. Why? No one wanted their chicken, that is why patron were forced to consume their chicken. Avoid this shop at all cost… Not worth wasting your money….
Hi Victor C, I’m not a fan of their chicken dish but wan tan mee not bad.
