Tanjung Sepat

Seafood @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant, Tanjung Sepat

During the recent Nuzul Quran holiday, I made an impromptu trip with the family to Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple at Jenjarom. After which we found the restaurant recommended by my dad in Banting closed, we stopped by Morib for a little while before looking for another restaurant for dinner. We had some tough time looking for the seafood restaurant which my dad vaguely remembered as ‘a restaurant located after Gold Coast Resort’.

We gave up on finding the no-name restaurant and simply choose another eatery. Turns out it was the correct restaurant. Fate I guess? The name of the restaurant is Asam Batu Laut Restaurant. I guess the name come from its location at Batu Laut and their fame for asam fish (which I found out later). This restaurant is located at the estuary complimented by mangrove forest, fishing boats and Strait of Melaka. Indeed it’s a lovely place to dine at.

This is the outdoor seating. Come early to choose the best seat. Only a couple of tables filled at 6.30pm.

Steamed Lala @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Steamed lala @ RM15.00. Broth is heavily seasoned with Shaoxing wine while the lalas are unfortunately rubbery. Ironically this dish was recommended to us as a best-seller. I blame the candle-lit flamed under the serving plate for overcooking the lalas. A forgettable dish.

Stir-fried Sweet Potato Leaves @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Stir-fried sweet potato leaves @ RM10.00. This one is good. The leaves are cooked to perfection with the presence of wok hei.

Steamed Grouper With Minced Ginger @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Steamed grouper/garoupa with minced ginger @ RM38.00. Our favorite dish. The minced ginger is spicy enough to tantalize our taste bud (chee kek in Cantonese) and the grouper fish is so fresh. I haven’t eaten a fish this fresh and yummy for a long long time. Highly recommended. A thriller dish. 🙂

Kam Heong Crabs @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Kam heong crab (1kg) @ RM48.00. It has 3 crabs in total and they are fresh and quite fleshy. I dislike the taste though. It ain’t the typical kam heong flavour, more like curry flavour. It’s quite spicy.

Additionally, we tapaued (take-out) salted egg mantis prawn @ RM10.00 (small). Sorry no picture. It’s the best salted egg mantis prawn! The mantis prawns are fried to perfection and with the combination of salted egg… ah lovely and highly addictive. It’s crunchy and spicy at the same time.

An hour later. The place is fully packed by the time we leave.

Overall, the food at Asam Batu Laut Restaurant are amazing and fresh. Would love to go back here to sample other dishes. If you’re like me who’s bored by the mediocre seafood offer at Port Village Seafood Restaurant (@ North Port, Port Klang), this place is a good alternative.

Update 2nd May 2015:
Went to this restaurant on Labor’s Day. Here are what we ordered…

Asam Steamed Snapper Fish @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Asam steamed snapper fish @ RM48.00. Since this restaurant has the name asam in it, we figured they are famous for asam fish hence we ordered this dish to try. The fish is so fresh. Yes, they have maintain the freshness quality after all these years. Unfortunately there is not enough asam in the broth. Not chee kek (exciting) enough as we said in Cantonese.

Marmite Baby Octopus @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Marmite baby octopus @ RM18.00. This dish is sweet and the baby octopus is just a little teeny weeny hard to bite. It has been deep-fried before being coated with sugar. I kinda like it.

Salted Egg Mantis Prawn @ Asam Batu Laut Restaurant
Salted egg mantis prawn @ RM18.00. So delicious. It’s as good as when I had it in 2013. Recommended.

We were let down when they told us their crabs have been sold out. I guess I need to make another trip here again in the near future. The restaurant were packed to the brim at 2pm when we arrived.

Hi Yoon, I guess the pricing cannot be helped since everything increases in price but the food quality… hmmm too bad ya.

Thanks for the review, but how can it be halal if it has wine in its dishes?

Hi Rai, I never thought of that. Oh so insensitive of me Thanks for pointing this out. I’ve updated my post.

We were seated nearer the car park area. At lunch time, be prepared to share your food with the resident flies. They will be dropping by to sit on your food. Very difficult trying to eat the prawns and crannwt fingers whilst keeping an eye out for these flies. Had to constantly shoo these flies away. Food was fresh and tasty though. Highly recommended.

Hai, did the steamed clam or other dishes still use wine in seasoning? Bcoz ur posting is in 2015. Do u know the status now?

Hi Arell, hope I answered your questions yesterday. I’m sure it’s non-halal but not sure why there are Muslim patrons. Do let me know if you find out.
