I’ve read many reviews of the yummylicious vegetarian meals serves at Po Lin Monastery many moons back and here I am on day 4 of my Hong Kong trip at Lantau Island. It was the foggiest day of our trip. We weren’t let down at all. Had a great time at the magical Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery.
By 11.30am, we head to the counter to get our ticket for vegetarian lunch.
Regular vegetarian meal cost HK60.00/pax (RM23.80) but meal starts at 1pm.
Deluxe vegetarian meal cost HK100.00/pax (RM39.70) and can be served from 11.30am onwards.
We bought the deluxe meal as we do not want to wait until 1pm. Deluxe meal is served in a ‘VIP Room’.
We don’t have to wait as meals were served right away. This is a vegetarian soup with several types of fungus and beancurd. YUMMY!!! Our cold body were immediately warmed by the soup.
Clockwise from top:
1. Vegetable dish (mushroom, celery, peas, asparagus, capsicum, cashew nuts).
2. Lemon beancurd sheet (if only our regular lemon chicken would taste like this, I was blown away by this dish!)
3. Vegetarian spring roll (so very good)
4. Mushroom with vegetable (I love the vegetable, something I’ve never eaten before. It’s like salad leaves)
I ate mostly the dishes and just a few bite of rice.
The taste of these vegetarian dishes are top notch. I give 5 stars baby! This is the BEST EVER vegetarian meal in my entire life! Really! I’m not joking. It’s so different from the ones back home in Malaysia. How should I describe it? It was very clean, flavorful, aromatic and you feel a sense of peacefulness with the dishes. Oh yeah you feel the love the cooks put into making these dishes as well.
Judging from the crowd, the Deluxe vegetarian meal at Po Lin Monastery is a favorite eh? Nuns from Po Lin Monastery eats here as well.
Right outside the ‘VIP Room’ is the open-air seating area. This is the place you sit for the regular meal lunch. It was the coldest day and I don’t know how they survived out here. It was raining and our toes and fingers were freezing. Basically we couldn’t even feel them! See the thick fog on the right?
At the end of the open-air seating area is this Vegetarian Dessert and Snacks counter.
Woah so many choices!
Lucky cake (lotus paste), crystal cake (red bean paste), lotus sago cake, deep fried dumpling.
If only my stomach can still fit some in…
This is interesting. Snow fungus cake, red bean cake, black sesame cake, mango sweet agar-agar.
Finally ‘beh tahan’, we tapau-ed the ‘lo hon’ vegetarian crisp roll and deep fried taro dumpling. Must-try is the ‘lo hon’ vegetarian crisp roll. So good! (even when it’s cold, coz we ate them later at Citigate Outlets). 6 pieces for HK20.00 (RM7.94)
Po Lin Monastery’s Vegetarian Restaurant is a must-eat place if you go to Ngong Ping. For sure I’m coming back for more! 🙂 I’ve told so many people about this vegetarian restaurant already! Hahaha

wow…the vegetarian meal there so “modern”. Not like ours here.
They looked so different ya? Over here (Malaysia) the vegetarian has one kind of taste one right? My dad refused to eat vegetarian food coz of that smell. Haha

The vegetarian dishes and the items in the dessert counter is too tempting. Waiting for the time I step foot in HK.
Many moons ago on Chor 1 and 15, it’s outside vegetarian meal for my mom, dad and me and the food were all loaded with MSG and oil to the max.

Make sure you try the vegetarian meal ya. Really very different.
Malaysian’s vege meals… they all have some kind of smell… very yucky one.

I just came back from Lantau Island and the vegetarian food was the best I have ever had anywhere in the world. Is there a way we can find these recipes? I was hoping they had a recipe book I could buy but did not find one. I did find beautiful music to bring home.

Hi, my father who is on wheelchair, isnt convenient for him to see the Statue and take the vegetarian meal? The last trip I have was a decade and cant remember if there is life access. Thanks
Hi Angel, as far as I remember there is no lift access to the statue. And to get to the vegetarian meal, it’s mostly flat land and stairs if I remember correctly.
