Preserving Fresh Herbs By Freezing

Fresh Rosemary

In Malaysia it’s quite difficult to get hold of fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, oregano, marjoram… except basil which I have successfully grew. The only place we can stock up on these herbs is from the hypermarket/supermarket. However most of the time I’m using only a portion of the herbs, the rest will be kept in fridge. And they won’t last long… a week or two later they will be thrown away. What a waste ya?

Fresh Rosemary

Right now I’m adopting the freezing method to preserve unused fresh herbs.

Here’s how I do it.

You will need an ice cube tray, water & Ziploc bag (optional).

Rosemary in ice cube tray

Place a couple of leaves into each compartments. Add water to the brink or half of it. Freeze. That’s it!

Freeze Rosemary

These are fresh rosemary in ice cubes. You can keep it like this until you need the herbs for soup or cooking. For me because I don’t have extra ice cube tray, I need to remove them and keep in the Ziploc bag.

Use it as it is for soup & cooking and thaw them if you’re going to use for salad or marinating. Simple as that. :)

Here’s another tip on storing fresh herbs – water container method
